Call to Order:  The Board Meeting was called to order at 9:34am by VP of Hiking and Trails, John Petrin, with the following in attendance:   President – Bob Bogdanoff (via phone), VP Social – Bebe Bruce & Carmel Smith, VP Membership & Website – Jim Beyer, Treasurer – Gordon Carbonetti Secretary – Cheryl Allmen, and VP Hiking & Trails – John Petrin.  Dan Kato, in charge of the Hiking Maintenance Project.

Hills Trail Maintenance Project-Dan Kato indicated he had selected mountain trails needing the most maintenance and the crew leaders would show up on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at 8am with the crew members arriving at 8:30am.  Gordon, Jim Wade and Dan plan to arrange pick up the Hiking Club’s tools (and a few from the Gardening Club) ahead of time. Three mules will drop off and pick up a few of the crews and ensure returns for lunch which starts at 12 noon. Some crew members will work close by and not need a ride up the hills.  Carmel intends to pick up the Foothill key early and give it to Bebe who will add an ice chest outside Foothill filled with ice/bottled water by 8:30am.

Carmel and Bebe have met with their Social Committee members (Linda Arbaugh, Rose Eagen, Wendy Werner and Helen Ware) and have planned a lunch will be a variety of sandwich platters (chicken, beef, ham), chips, drinks/ice and fruit salad for dessert. Approximate menu cost to date is $269.32. Gordon agreed to pick up beer for additional beverages. A SECRET surprise celebration honoring Wate Bakker’s 90th birthday (member who’s been a long-time leader and contributor to many of the club’s hikes).  The celebration will be complete with a birthday cake and singing Happy Birthday in both English and Dutch supported by his family members and Dan Kato playing his guitar.  Dan was thanked ahead of time for his planning of the project.

  • Reports:

Secretary – Cheryl emailed the Minutes of the February Board Meeting. Bebe motioned to approve the minutes, seconded by Carmel.  Motion approved.

Treasurer – Gordon summarized the February 2023 financial statements he had emailed earlier:  General Budget started with $4,031.21 plus the addition of the club member’s dues and minus $500 approved earlier and transferred to the Hills Budget for a final balance of $6,145.21.  With the addition of $500, the Hill Lands account now totals, $2,515.21.  Gordon motioned to approve the reports, seconded by Cheryl.  Motion passed.

VP Membership & Website – Jim stated the current membership is 312 with the addition of Tim and Mary Robinson, RC Colman, and Kathy Doenbrowski.

Related to our website which is going well, he’s been coordinating with David Cook who serves as software consultant to 9 Villages Clubs (most recent addition is the Dog Club) and supports creation, set up, maintenance and updates of their websites.  As a result, Jim recommends converting from paper applications to the Club to an on-line registration program.  This will set up and provide a membership list allowing members to include their name, phone number and opportunity to give permission to add their email address or opt out of listing their on line address.  Additionally, the Hiking Club will be receiving a 2023 bill for $125 from David which the Board has earlier approved of.

VP Hiking & Trails – John indicated all weekly hikes have been going well, despite the weather not always co-operating with variety of winter storms which has cancelled some of the publicized walks/hikes.  The first of the Magnificent 7 hikes, coordinated and lead by Al Girolami, included 2 county parks with total of 11 hikers participating.

Related to our Spring Outing we’re meeting our goal of reserving at least 20 Sonora Lumberjack Hotel rooms soon.  17 rooms have already been reserved and 2 more expected.  John plans to announce the outing again at the next General Hiking Club meeting.

which continues as $2,215.89. Attachments 1, 2

update the Club’s website continues very well. He also mentioned that release forms will
be available for non-resident guests accompanying our Hiking Club outings and hikes.
VP Hiking & Trails – Gary announced that planning our 2022 fall outing is a high
priority and is arranging a meeting in the next week or two to finalize a location within
reasonable driving distances due to higher gas prices, trails/hiking options, logistics and
details. He indicated most members have shared the possibility of a California coastal
area such as Cambria, Los Osos, Pt Reyes, and Pismo Beach. Late September and early
October dates have been suggested as possible dates since some member’s calendars are
already have full schedules beginning in mid-October. Cheryl agreed to contact Ramon
Rezo, a former hiking board member, who might have some information on Cambria and
some other coastal areas.

VP Social – Bernice indicated there were no additional costs for the recent Variety Night
which was well received by the membership. She has communicated with Wendy
Ledamun who is coordinating the Club’s July Summer BBQ event on her behalf since
she’ll be out of the area. Publicity and her event planning is going very well. Related to
the upcoming September event, discussion occurred related to either selecting a potluck
or getting a caterer to supply the food. After researching the possibilities, details will be
coming soon.
President – Bob shared he communicated with Tom Muniz, The Villages Director of
Facilities, Maintenance Services and Cary from Kings Grading staff who have been
working in the hills connecting Skyway and Joe Marsh trails while doing general fire
prevention actions, cleaning up several trails and ensuring improved vehicle hill access in
case of emergencies. They’ve temporarily moved our mailbox during this time-frame.
Bob has observed that there is a positive relationship between the Villages, Hiking Club
and Kings Grading and presently, we’re waiting for the city’s permit approval before our
additional hill projects can be addressed.
Bob has met with Franz Spickoff, our speaker at our June 27 th General Club meeting
several times and indicates the presentation is very good and our membership will really
enjoy great photos of his Annapurna Mountain experience.
Lastly, Bob hopes to have an orientation/get acquainted meeting targeting new Hiking

volunteer their talents and interests to our club activities. Since there were no old or new
business topics, Bob reviewed the following meetings information.

Board Meeting Minutes 21-Apr-2022

                                                   Villages Hiking Club Board Minutes

Thursday April 21, 2022, Forum Room, Cribari

President, Bob Bogdanoff, called the meeting to order at 9:34am.  100% of the 2022 Board Members attended:  VP Social – Bernice Capitano, VP Membership & Website – Jim Beyer, Treasurer – Gordon Carbonetti, Secretary – Cheryl Allmen and VP Hiking & Trails – Gary Lohr.

 Reports

Secretary – Cheryl indicated both March 2022 Board and General meeting minutes have been emailed to the Board members, submitted to Jim for inclusion on the club’s website, and will be displayed at the April 25th General meeting at the back table for member’s review.   Gordon motioned and Gary seconded for acceptance of the March General and Board Meeting minutes.  Motion passed.

Treasurer – Gordon shared the current Hills Funds ending balance of $2,215.89 and the General Funds balance of $5,860.19 which included addition of $35 of 5 new members. He also indicated Sunshine Committee member, Terri Vivoli, had forwarded a get well card to Peter Song who is recuperating from a hiking injury. Jim moved to accept the treasurer’s current reports and Cheryl seconded.  Motion passed.

VP Membership & Website – Jim announced that last month 4 new members (David and Babette Bryce, John Zhang, and Mimi Rong) joined the club and one person was removed resulting in a current membership of 309 members.  Website continues to be improved and undated.

VP Social – Bernice reminded the Board that planning for the Club’s Variety Night scheduled for May 12th is moving along well.  She met with Wendy Ledamun who informed her of similar past activities and gave her names of previous performers and clubs to contact such as the Ukulele Club, hula dancers, singing groups, etc.  Five acts have signed up so far and she is hoping to have a total of 10 soon encouraging Board members to announce the possibility to clubs and others they know who have talents to share.  The evening will also feature a Potluck in addition to the talent series.

Bernice indicated she will not be available for our July picnic and indicated Wendy agreed to manage it during her absence.

VP Hiking and Trails—Gary shared that the Rambler and Rambler -Lite hikes have been scheduled and attended well now that COVID regulations have been reduced but we have had very few long hikes.  Need for more hiking leaders also surfaced.

The Board discussed these issues and came up with a few ideas to consider that could 1.  Increase availability of long hikes, 2.  Create different hikes on other days such as Fridays which was indicated on our recent survey results, and 3.  Increase a higher number of hike leaders.  Thoughts included given higher gas prices, plan long hikes closer to the Villages (within 10 miles) to reduce mileage costs;  reach out to other organizations that have guides in different hiking areas;  schedule a Hike Leader Pre-hike on Friday during the Chico trip; announce a hike leader orientation to members thinking about leading a hike;  meet with new club members to orient them to the club offerings;  encourage some members considering  leading a hike to partner with and accompany a guide to increase familiarity with leading;  and, coordinate hikes to additional sites such as Alum Rock, Big Basin, ocean areas, Grant Ranch, etc.

President – Bob indicated

  • Spring Trip to Chico has 35 attendees participating and has helped some requesting carpooling details. He’s notified restaurant reserved for the May 5th dinner of the numbers registered for the Chico event and indicated a 5:30pm shuttle will transport members to the restaurant.  He is also planning on meeting with Dan Kato to check out the details on the various Chico hikes and also holding a Wednesday meeting later on the 4th to further communicate hiking options with the attendees, and also send out a reminder email to the participants of the details on the trip.

As to future club outings planning, Cheryl mentioned possibly reviewing some of the past outings, determine what types of locations are popular, request suggestions of locations from the membership and possibly plan both spring and fall outings nearer to the April and October months since some members indicated they already had conflicts with other May events and COVID regulations had delayed many Villages activities.

  • King Grading Update. While hiking, Bob ran into and talked with some of the King Grading workers related to planned grading activity. They indicated the garden path area is dependent upon City of San Jose approval, there is a future brush maintenance planned and grading will most likely occur in the next month.

Old Business/New Business.  None discussed.
